Strategies for Reading Early Chinese Manuscripts & for Re-Reading Chinese Classics (University of Vienna) – Call for Participants

University of Vienna, Department of Near Eastern Studies, invites interested students and young scholars to an intensive two-day seminar on Strategies for Reading Early Chinese Manuscripts & for Re-Reading Chinese Classics, led by Dr. Adam Craig Schwartz  (PhD, Chicago, 2013), Associate Professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology, Hong Kong Baptist University.

The seminar will be held in person from 5th to 6th March 2024 at the Department of Near Eastern Studies of the University of Vienna. Applications must be sent by January 15, 2024, successful applicants will be notified by January 31, 2024.

Kateřina Gajdošová PhD., project title: Self and Agency from the Perspective of Early Chinese Texts (2023-2025) In her post-doctoral project, she proposes an alternative ontological framework for interpretation of early Chinese (excavated) texts. Drawing from the continental philosophy of process, she seeks to reformulate the categories of agent and action, to focus on the "locus of power" and "precursors of action", and to present the act of establishing a shared world as a value-laden endeavour.
