Abstract:

Growing body of recently unearthed bamboo-strip manuscripts offers new perspectives on the nature of textual production and transmission in the Warring States Period (451-221 BCE). Through analysis and close reading of two selected Yi Zhou shu 逸周書 manuscripts from the collection of the Tsinghua University, the participants will be introduced to the methods of working with unearthed manuscripts and to a variety of problems pertaining to the relation of unearthed and received texts.

Requirements: solid command of Classical Chinese, familiarity with assigned readings (to be distributed closer to the workshop)

About the speaker: Edward L. Shaughnessy is the Lorraine J. and Herrlee G. Creel Distinguished Service Professor of Early China in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations of the University of Chicago. His main work is in the cultural and literary history of China’s Shang and Zhou periods with a focus on unearthed and received texts.
